Details

Formerly known as the 'Fibre of the Gods', Vicuna is luxurious, precious and feather-light fibre that is produced by the exquisite and extremely graceful national animal of Peru: the Vicuna. In ancient times, the Incas worshipped the Vicunas and considered the fibre the ultimate gift from the Inca gods. Hence, only royalty were allowed to wear Vicuna garments. Today, the Vicuna lives in the high alpine areas of the Andes as a free animal and is covered with a remarkably long, fine and silky coat that shows shades of light cinnamon to a pale white. Due to the fact the animal can only be shaved once in three years, the fibre is considered to be from signaficant value and quality. When the extremely fine wool is knitted together, it is very soft, warm and silky.
The wool is sorted and dehaired entirely by hand in Andean communities in order to process the noble fibers. It is available in natural colours and for the first time available for hand-knitting.
