Resist Printed + Indigo or Iron Dyed Fabrics:
These fabrics are both hand block printed using a resist and hand dyed by local artisans from Pakistan. This technique can be done on silk, cotton-silk and cotton with either natural indigo dye or natural iron dye. Hand block printing is a centuries old South Asian art form that utilizes a hand carved Shisham (Indian Rosewood) wood block, stamped by hand onto a fabric. The wood block is carefully prepared as a relief pattern, which means certain areas are cut away with various sizes of chisels, leaving a pattern to show at the original surface level. Block printing is one of the most ancient and time-consuming methods of textile printing: a master printer dips the wooden printing block into a resist paste, then stamps the block on the fabric with a firm blow of the fist at the centre of the block, ensuring even printing. They will repeat this from left to right, aligning the blocks perfectly by eye from years of experience. Then the entire cloth is immersed in the natural dye. The results are extremely artistic and most are unobtainable by any other method. The block print pattern shown is an example, which can be applied to your very own design.
